How many people and who do you know can be coined an actual Sneaker Artist? Singapore’s pioneer Sneaker Artist and friend of v.a.u.l.t, Mark Ong aka SBTG, that’s who.
The 138 sneaker (for the guys) is a SBTG collaboration with FICE Boutique in Salt Lake City, Utah and is available on the FICE online store here. Punk Rock resonates right away with the instantly recognizable The Misfits’ skull logo, barb wire graphics and the fitting Royalefam Crossbone Lace Buckles!
This 7:22 video by VitaBrevisFilms reveals an indepth insight behind the design inspiration behind the SBTG X FICE sneaker – We are 138 ,which is the title of a track by the American Punk Rock band The Misfits, first released in June 1978 and re-released in 1995.
In this film, Mark reveals his representation of 138 as ‘Punk Rock + good energy + good vibrations that resonate with the number’ and how it signifies ‘freedom and being free and passionate about what you wanna do’. But more than just a film on the sneaker itself, it reveals a deeply personal insight on Mark’s own evolution from sneakerhead to an artist and storyteller, as he tells his stories through his shoes as his canvases.
What v.a.u.l.t likes about the film is the angle which inspires all artists to create their own artistic path, really! Mark’s ethos as an artist to ‘use everything around you to create’ and thus ‘evolve and create one’s own style’ is encouraging to all and most importantly, the relativity of what defines success to every individual. Breaking it down to life’s bonuses, satisfaction and to decide for yourself what is really at the crux of the matter.

TRIVIA!
we at v.a.u.l.t were pretty intrigued with the number 138’s association with the track and found that Mark was right – there is no true association or meaning to it. However, there were a few assumptions that surfaced online and the closest one we liked was that it was based on George Lucas’ first sci-fi movie ‘THX-1138’ which is about a time in the future when people are known by numbers instead of names. We reckon it’s pretty apt in a way… TIME TO WAKE UP PEOPLE, LET’S NOT ALL BECOME ROBOTS!
Part of the lyrics of the track goes:
‘Do you think we’re robot clean…does this face look almost mean…Is it time to be an android, not a man?’
