LANEWAY FESTIVAL SINGAPORE 2011

Mark your calendars for January 29th because Australia’s St Jerome’s Laneway Festival is making their way to town!

Since their debut in Melbourne, Australia in 2004, the Laneway Festival has garnered a strong following with sell-out festivals annually in Australia and New Zealand. 7 years on, it’s a big statement to expand outisde of Australasia and we’re hella glad they picked Singapore!

!!! Chk Chk Chk

From !!! (Chk Chk Chk) ‘s homepage headline which reads “There’s no f***ing rules, dude” – we can be sure to expect a kick- ass show from these California  boys, no holds barred. With the latest release of their long-awaited 4th LP Strange Weather, Isn’t It? as endorsed by the very cool Warp Records , these indie-rock, dance-punk boys are guaranteed to bring their riot to our local shores!

Beach House

You know that anyone who tours with Cat Power in her 2009 tour definitely has talent to boot. And Beach House is that and so much more! Formed in 2004, Victoria Legrand’s dreamy vocals combined with Alex Scally’s captivating skill on keyboards and guitar are the perfect combination to a spellbinding performance. We can’t wait to see this indie-rock duo live!

Deerhunter

Deerhunter is a 4-piece indie-rock band who hail from Atlanta, Georgia and describe their sound as ‘ambient-punk’. Headbanging and hypnotic all at once, Karen O of ‘Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ has gone as far as to liken their performace to ‘a religious experience’. Bringing their 4th LP Halcyon Digest to the table, expect a visual and aural feast !

Foals

The stuff that Foals are made of have got them a nomination in the 2010 Mercury Prize, and so much more.  A 5-piece band from Oxford, UK – their recent sold-out Australian tour attests to their soaring popularity as their new record Total Life Forever further creates an impact by setting the mood on the hit television series, Entourage with their song  Spanish Sahara.

Holy F***

Holy F*** is known to give riveting, explicit performances, can you tell? Known to have a chaotic sonic music, this Ontario instrumental quartet has legends like Lou Reed and the rocking Thom Yorke as fans. ’nuff said.

Ladyhawke

Having swept away the 2009 Aria Music Awards and New Zealand Music Awards that same year, Ladyhawke represents what she sets out to – and that is to just cut the crap and go straight for the kill. She shares the new wave, electro pop-rock throne with the likes of La Roux and Peaches, with whom she collaborated on for her hit track Paris is burning, with Peaches on decks. A v.a.u.l.t Fave!

Yeasayer

Yeasayer is a experimental rock, psychedelic pop band who was titled ‘Most blogged artist of 2010’ by the Hype Machine . And for good reason. Constantly engaging their audiences in prog-pop expertise, their tour line-up from appearances in festivals like SXSW, Lollapalooza, Pitchfork Music Festival and Coachella to name a few, just goes to show their A-list quality.

Warpaint :: photo by Mia Kirby

From Los Angeles, USA, we have Warpaint . Made up of Californians Emily Kokal, Jenny Lee Lindberg, Theresa Wayman and Australian Stella Mozgawa, they fuse together all their vocals in harmonic splendour with their droning guitars + pulsing bass lines in a psychedelic mix that leaves the crowd wanting.

Band trivia: Jenny’s sister who is actress Shannyn Sossamon, was the original drummer in Warpaint – but decided to leave the band to focus on acting!

The Temper Trap

Last but not least, we have The Temper Trap .If you’ve haven’t heard of them by now, you must be living deep within the trenches AND under a giant boulder. They are only just about Australia’s hottest export of the past 5 years, who have just taken out 2 key ARIA Awards for their critically acclaimed breakthrough album Conditions.

Having rocked their alternative, indie-rock vibes globally across all major music festivals and having spread their infectiously addictive hits like Sweet Disposition, Fader and Love Lost (v.a.u.l.t ♥) , The Temper Trap have been on a 12 month world tour for their album and will close it out with their performance here in Singapore at the Laneway Festival! Expect nothing less than EPIC.
