Jamie XX :: Singapore :: 28 July 2011 :: v.a.u.l.t recognises

Human beings are creatures of habit.We’re naturally moved by what we know and this was evident since the beginning of my night. Once inside, the perpetual question of “has he started yet?” was asked until we recognised the distinct change in beats from the outdoor speakers.He has begun.

Jamie XX started his set coaxing us with smooth, lounge beats.Looking around, there were many stoic faces in the crowd and that cemented the fact that clubbers just want what they know. Even the tribute he did with a sample from the late Amy Winehouse’s “Tears dry on their own” seemed to have washed over the slightly placid crowd, who were clearly waiting for the harder beats so their dance moves could have something to cling on.Soon enough, he brought out his beat arsenal and it didn’t disappoint.

He had it all planned out beautifully like a 5 course meal at Guy Savoy’s – a smooth start with a respectful tribute, then easing into a gradual ascend and finally fast tracking to the land of holy beatdom.

The most recognizable track of the night came in the finale when Jamie XX dropped his remix of Adele’s “Rolling in the deep”. That sent the club into a frenzy and he ended his set the same way he begun – a nod to this generation’sfemale jazz powerhouses.
He brought it last night. It was a comfortable mesh of house meets minimal,peppered with soul. There was a little something for everyone.

After all, we’re all creatures of habit.
