Who are you?:
I’m Dexter, one half of the two man team organizing Sole Superior, Singapore’s first full scale sneaker and streetwear convention.
How long have you been into sneakers?
I’ve been buying sneakers on and off since I was 16. I’ve worked at a few local sneaker shops for a bit and I guess that’s when my obsession with sneakers hit full throttle.
What is your favourite pair of sneakers?
My all time favourite pair is not anything remotely sought after. It’s a pair of Nike Terminator Lows done up in the Syracuse College colours. Those were the first pair my parents bought me way back when I was 16. To this day, I still have the pair that my parents bought me.
How did Sole Superior come about?:
It’s kind of a funny story actually. Jon (my co-organizer) and I met while queuing up for sneakers roughly two years ago. We always talked shop during these camp-outs, which was rare as many of those queuing would rarely talk to one another. Needless to say, a lot of what we talked about revolved around sneakers. So the idea of sneaker convention came up and we thought it would was high time Singapore had its own.
So we asked around if anyone wanted to plan one but most could not, due to busy schedules and what not. So we decided to get our hands dirty and do it ourselves.
Why did you two decide to set up Sole Superior?
Well because we’re stark raving mad! We both have day jobs and Sole Superior is an event done entirely after our work hours. What started as an inside joke soon became a reality and boy were our eyes opened by the whole planning process. It certainly is an endeavour of passion for us, and we just want to put up a good show.
What can people expect at Sole Superior?
We are very proud to say that we have amassed a total of 45 brands, independent labels and vendors for the convention so there will definitely be a little something for everyone.
Attendees can expect a visual spectacle especially for the brands and shops as they lay out 2014 releases and never seen before samples for everyone’s viewing pleasure. We’re not going to say more on this front as we want people to have a surprise on that day.
How about just a little sneak peek?
Well expect a mountain of lucky draw prizes to be won, from rare sneakers to limited edition tee shirts created just for Sole Superior. Best part of this lucky draw? Every ticket comes with a lucky draw so you don’t even need to do anything.
We heard that there’s a charity component as well.
Yes! In fact, there are two charity drives happening during the event, the charity raffle for the Children’s Cancer Foundation and a fundraiser to raise money to help the Hurricane Haiyan relief effort in the Philippines.
What’s gonna happen for both charity events?
Well for the charity raffle, we’re selling raffle tickets at $10 a pop with all proceeds going to the Cancer Foundation. There’s no limit to the number of tickets can buy and if your ticket is called, you stand a chance to win sick sneakers including an autographed pair of adidas superstars by Snoop Dogg as well as a pair of the Nike Galaxy Foamposites.
To end off, what booths are you most excited to see?
Well needless to say, I am stoked to see what all our vendors have in store for us. But I am most interested in seeing what the brands, like adidas, Nike, Reebok amongst others, have in mind for Sole Superior. They have all told us that they’re going all out for this event, which as a sneakerhead, will an absolute sneaker overdose on the 30th of November.
