karl lagerfeld’s chanel cruise 2011 short film – ‘Remember now’

Just released in Chanel’s St Tropez Resort celebrations was the much hyped Karl Lagerfeld’s new short film for the Chanel Cruise 2011 – Remember Now. Starring French actor Pascal Greggory, American model Heidi Mount, Italian model Elisa Sednaoui and Mr Lagerfeld’s latest muse : French model Baptiste Giabiconi, the 16 minute short film is fun, opulent and injected with meaningful theatrics. Dance and music feature frequently, ranging from remixes by DJ Munk to Sacha Distel’s 1968 track ‘Allez donc vous faire bronzer’.

I reckon Mr. Lagerfeld is explicitly showing his fashion forecast from cruise 2011 onwards – that it’s time to skip the 70’s, derived from a very open comment made by Pascal’s character.

My personal take is that he feels that it’s moving to the 80’s – seen from his soft technicolor shots.

Quotes throughout the film show Lagerfeld’s overall theme – timeless fun and his preoccupation with age, particularly for someone known to insist that no one knows his real age.

Yet at the same time, there seems to be an irony within the theme, whereby there is an existing cultural ignorance in today’s society. Pascal’s date – supermodel Carmen Kass asks who Colette is, he replies :

Overall, one thing both parts of the short film have in common as it transitions from night to day: music, dancing, partying and FUN! Karl Lagerfeld provides his answers to life in that simple framework, all while showcasing the Chanel Cruise 2011 collection in an artistic and cinematic style. His ideal location for the filming and showing? He emerges at the end to egg the answer out: St Tropez.
