CAI GUO-QIANG: HEAD ON (2006)

WHAT IT IS: 99 life-sized replicas of wolves and glass wall

WHAT IT MEANS:

The installation represents the tensions between the former East and West Germany, despite its reunification and the collapse of the Berlin Wall. The wolf pack is seen to “form an arc full of force and power, their fierce couage and spirit of warrior camaraderie seemingly serving as a reminder to people: humanity is easily blinded by a kind of collective mentality and action, and is destined to repeat such error to an almost unbelievable degree. The crux of this installation lies just before the glass wall, as the artist reminds people: invisible walls are the hardest to dismantle”

WHAT IT FELT LIKE TO ME:

I ♥♥♥ installations like these – raw, provoking, empowering and with a strong resonating message. The wolves looked so realistic, and the message so clear, one that I agree reflects the herd mentality of us humans today. How we can and should learn from history – but we don’t.
