BERNHARD WILLHELM :: SS’11

World, meet Bernhard Willhelm.

Having studied 5 years at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp from 1994 – 1998,  he released his namesake label in Fall 1999 and a Menswear line in Fall 2003. Willhelm is all at once experimental & edgy and has earned a reputation as an avant-guarde designer… obviously so when he was the chosen one for BJÖRK’s 2007 WORLD TOUR ‘Volta’, creating all outfits including that for the brass band, flags for the stage and album cover sculpture, shot by Nick Knight.

Willhelm has a strong inclination to showcase his aesthetics through fashion, design and Art. He first worked with curator Nikolaus Schaffhausen on his 1st men’s solo exhibition at Art Foundation ‘Ursula Blickle’ in 2003 and went on to collaborate with conceptualist Cyril Duval in his flagship store design in Shibuya, Tokyo in 2006. This partnership won them THE GREAT INDOORS AWARD for the best shop concept by Frame magazine .

In 2007, Willhelm had 2 exhibitions – “black is also available in white” in collaboration with artist Carsten Fock in Berlin and Stockholm and “HET TOTAAL RAPPEL” with artists Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs at the MOMU in Antwerp, which was a retrospective of his work. That same year, at the Athen’s Biennale Willhelm collaborated with Dirk Bonn in a film  “red rose pink donkey”

In 2008 he collaborated with Camper-Together and in 2009 & 2010, held a Solo exhibition “Bernhard Willhelm Jutta Kraus” at the GRONINGER MUSEUM, with curators Mark Wilson and Sue-an van der Zijp.
